My research focuses on building 2nd grade boys' self-reliance skills during coding lessons. Tackling a coding challenge requires initial planning and analyzing the cause and effect of coding sequences to problem-solve next steps; however, many boys often dive right into a challenge without hesitation. I wondered if introducing a visual tool to guide them through the steps of tackling a coding challenge might foster growth in their metacognitive abilities.

My research question is: How does incorporating a visual navigation checklist during coding sessions affect second grade boys’ metacognitive skills?
